With mixed emotions, we announce the death of
Decatur “Steve” Butler in late July–mixed emotions, for while we grieve
the loss of our friend, we also give thanks to God that his sufferings
in this life are at an end and pray that he might have rest eternal and
light perpetual to shine upon him.
You may or may not have known Steve by name.
Steve was a fixture in Morgantown. A tall dark-haired man with prominent
mustache, he was often seen walking the streets of the city. He was
a regular patron of the Morgantown Public Library. He also performed
as a musician in some of our local taverns. More than a few of the
religious leaders in town were frequently visited by Steve–he had a passion
for conversation.
A funeral was conducted at the Chapel of Christ
the King (Lutheran Campus Center at WVU) on Wednesday, August 20, at 7:00
PM. Several members of the religious community participated in the
liturgy: Chaplain Matthew Riegel (LCM@WVU), Fr. Paul Hudock (St. John Newman),
The Rev. Ken Ramsey (Wesley UMC), Chaplain Ed Horvat (Mon General Hospital),
and Dr. Cheryl Torsney (Tree of Life Synagogue)--a testament to Steve's
ecumenical spirit. The Morgantown VFW Post provided military honors.
Steve lay in state in the Chapel sanctuary from 9:00 AM until the time
of the service, with prayer offices at 9:00 AM, 12:00 N, and 3:00 PM. |
