Fellowship Transformed
Designed by students for students
Follwing the maxim, "form follows function," we asked ourselves, "How
does the space serve the fellowship, meeting, educational, and
recreational life of the campus ministry?" We asked, "How might
it do it better?" And we asked, "What patterns of fellowship are
now emerging or might be created?" Armed with information
gathered from two focus groups, numerous conversations, and plenty of
observation and reflection, we asked the Interior Design Program at WVU
for help. The senior design class took up the project,
reimagining the furnishings, decor, and amenities of the undercroft to
create a place deisgned by students for students.
Kitchen
Food and Fellowship go together like bread and butter.
Consequently, the single largest component of the undercroft renovation
is the kitchen. We will completely redesign the kitchen,
intalling new cabinetry, increasing storage space and improving
utility. Additional electrical wiring will faclitate the use of
small appliances. The addition of a dishwasher and garbage
disposal will improve sanitation. Kitchen ventilation will
improve air quality. The creation of a designated "coffee"
station will improve hospitality. All this will make the
preparation, service, and clean-up of food easier, more sanitary, and
more pleasant.
Tables
If you're going to eat, it's easier to do so sitting down. Adding
smaller, square tables which can be gantged together will allow us to
configure the seating arrangement in the room into different
arrangements with greater ease. For large gatherings, long
"beirgarten" tables can be created. For mid-terms, the tables can
be separated for greater privacy. Of course, everything in
between would be possible, faclitating small dinners, business
meetings, classroom lectures, etc.. Matching chairs would be a
bonus.
Light and Air
The addition of windows will allow natural light into the space, a
major improvement over the sterile flourescent lights. The
windows will also allow natural ventilation, improving air
quality. Lastly, the windows will allow light to shine out, a
signal to passersby that we are "open for business." Lastly, the
installation of air conditioning will ... ?
Furnishings
The replacement of worn furnishings with modern furnishings using
commercial strength fabrics will improve visual appeal and general
comfort. The installation of an entertainment center, new library
shelves, and computer furniture will furhter enhance comfort and
utility.
