Summer 2007
Highlights

Grate Joins the LCM@WVU Staff

Rebecca "Becca" Grate (WVU '07) will intern with the LCM@WVU for the next year, assuming responsibilities related to hospitality, office administration, and capital campaign work.  Grate brings tremendous organizational skills which should lead to a major reform of the administrative operations of the LCM@WVU.  Having earned a B.A. in Psychology, Grate plans to attend seminary in Fall '08 as part of her preparation to enter the Deaconess Community.  "This is a real blessing," said Riegel.  "Becca's presence may just prove transformative for this campus ministry.  In return, I believe that Becca will learn a great deal about how a small church related agency functions and relates to the larger church."

Synod Assembly '07

The 2007 Synod Assembly of the West Vriginia-Western Maryland Synod of the ELCA was held in Huntington the first week of June.  Jason Felici, a student participant in the LCM@WVU, was present as a voting member of the synod council.  Becca Grate, our LCM@WVU intern, was also present, staffing the LCM@WVU info table.  Chaplain Riegel was elected to a third term on the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, Board of Directors.  He was also elected treasurer of the synod.

The LCM@WVU kicked off its capital campaign at the Synod Assembly.  Since the theme of the assembly was "social ministry," Riegel began his report to the body by highlighting the work of the Lutheran Disaster Response Collegiate Corps.  A $1000 gift for the capital campaign by an anonymous congregation was announced at the assembly.

Ian Reid ('03) Ordained

Ian Reid ('03) was ordained at the Lower Susquehanna Synod Assembly on June 8.  Reid, a native of North Caroline, attended the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, after completing his undergrad at WVU.  Chaplain Riegel served as Reid's ordination sponsor during the liturgy.  Also attending the ordination were doctoral candidate Daniel Van Vliet and recent alumni/ae Randy and Jennifer Conley and the famous Reju.  Reid will serve St. James Lutheran Church, Lebanon, PA.

Summer Ice Cream Social Draws Crowd

Our first summer term fellowship event, an Ice Cream Social, drew a crowd of two dozen, a large number for summer term.  Of course, temperatures did soar into the low 90s that Thursday, June 7.  In addition to the Scrabble Mixer mentioned above, a cookout is being planned.  If you have other ideas for summertime socials, please visit our LSM@WVU FaceBook Group.

Scrabble!

The LCM@WVU hosted students in the WVU Intensive English Program for Ice Cream and Scrabble on Friday, June 15.  Sitting around the Scrabble board, each IEP student was paired with a native speaker.  Although Armed with portable, computer dictionaries, the women from Japan (and their American partners) proved no match for the all-male team of Muthamma (from Saudi Arabia) and Riegel.  There is talk of another afternoon of Scrabble sometime in July.  If you like to play Scrabble, let us know.

FaceBook?

The LCM@WVU boldly--actually, with much fear and trepidation--steps into the cyberworld of FaceBook.  Groups have been started for LSM@WVU (our university recognized student group), Lutheran Campus Ministry Alumni/ae, Schola Cantorum (our early sacred music ensemble), and the Lutheran Disaster Response Collegiate Corps.  If you are on FaceBook, feel free to join up.
